CONTEXT

Beauty Supply Store on Centinela with the Blinking Light (2024)
Beauty Supply Store on Centinela with the Blinking Light (2024) at Bread & Salt Gallery was a durational performance running ~2:30 hours. The Braider makes her debut appearance, dressed head to toe in several layers of Black clothing: two dresses, five skirts and three tops. A hoop skirt gives her bottom half a bell shape or similarly the butt of a giant spider. Layers of hair are affixed to The Braider’s wrists, her waist, protruding atop her stomach and around her head, shielding her vision.

Thank you, Kindly
Thank you, Kindly (2023) was presented in the Performance Space Gallery as an installation with a private performance. Twenty people were invited to witness a recital of sensitive poetry new and old as The Swamp Monster sits in her pulpit of net and hair. A white projector light does little to illuminate her body under the protection of the net, serving as a screen for the viewer and the viewed.

For All You've Done For Me (2022)
For All You’ve Done For Me (2022) was a private performance held in the Commons Gallery. Seven people were invited to witness a self-choreographed praise dance from The Dancer. The Dancer’s hair is nailed to the wall in a semicircle. The projector light faces The Dancer, obscuring her vision from the audience. The video projected is of The Dancer in her backyard. Sound from the video comes from mimicking her Mother singing, Thank You Lord (for all you’ve done for me), by Walter Hawkins. The Dancer is wearing a long-sleeved white praise dance dress and Black socks she forgot to take off.
